Labor Tax Reform and Equilibrium Unemployment: A Search and Matching Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper studies simple strategies of labor tax reform in a search and matching model of the labor market featuring endogenous labor supply. Changing the composition of the tax wedge—that is, reducing a payroll tax and increasing a progressive wage tax such that the marginal tax wedge remains unaffected—increases employment, reduces the equilibrium unemployment rate, and increases public revenue as long as workers do not have all the bargaining power in wage negotiations. A strategy of replacing employment taxes by payroll taxes increases employment and reduces the equilibrium unemployment rate, while the effect on public revenue is ambiguous. JEL codes: J3, J680.

In exploring the impact of tax policy on labor-market performance, the paper first investigates how tax reform impacts labor supply and equilibrium unemployment in representative agent models. متن کاملTaxes, Subsidies and Equilibrium Labor Market Outcomes
We explore the effects of taxes and subsidies on job creation, job destruction, employment, and wages in the Mortensen-Pissarides version of the search and matching equilibrium framework. Qualitative analytical results show that wage and employment subsidies increase employment, especially of low skill workers, and also increase wages. A job creation or hiring subsidy reduces unemployment durat...
متن کاملLabor Taxation in Search Equilibrium with Home Production
Conventional models of equilibrium unemployment typically imply that proportional taxes on labor earnings are neutral with respect to unemployment as long as the tax does not affect the replacement rate provided by unemployment insurance, i.e., unemployment benefits relative to after-tax earnings. When home production is an option, the conventional results may no longer hold. This paper uses a ...

In this study, using the overlapping generation (OLG (model and the Stochastic Dynamic General Equilibrium (DSGE) approach, the optimal form of labor income tax rate and capital income tax functions is extracted for the economy of Iran using annual time series data during 1357 to 1397. The results of comparing the calibration and simulation of the designed model show that the optimal functions ...
